Fixed Gmail iOS app now available in Apple App Store

Following up from a less than successful start, Google made available its fixed Gmail app for iOS yesterday after the original was yanked from the app store at the beginning of November. The first version disappeared just hours after being released due to critical bugs in its notification system.

For many years, iPhone owners have had to make do with Apple's own email client, which while very useful lacked many of the specific Gmail features available in the dedicated Gmail app enjoyed by millions of those using Android OS powered devices.

In a post on Google's official Gmail blog, product manager Matthew Izatt announced it was once again available, promising it now functions as it should. Despite now being fixed, the whole affair has been rather embarrassing for Google as many believe they should have squashed the bugs in testing well before its official release.

Izatt took the opportunity to express that the Gmail team had received a lot of helpful feedback and feature requests. "Based on your comments we have already improved our handling of image HTML messages - they are now sized to fit to the screen and you can pinch to zoom in."

Google plans to rapidly release further updates to the now working Gmail app, taking into account all user feedback to give them the features they want and need. User feedback included requests for everything from multiple account support to customizations like improved notifications and mobile specific signatures.
